Mind/Body Health

Balancing conventional medicine with complementary
care for greater health and wellness

What is Mind/Body Health?

Mind/Body Health is a treatment approach that complements conventional medicine. It integrates mind and body by combining relaxation techniques, nutrition, exercise and cognitive therapy with standard medical practice. Clinical research indicates that Mind/Body interventions not only enhance the mind’s capacity to affect bodily function and symptoms, but also to enhance actual medical treatment.

Although considered to be a holistic and integrative healthcare, contrary to popular belief, Mind/Body Health is not synonymous with alternative healthcare. Alternative may refer to treatments that are alternatives, rather than complements, to traditional medicine. Mind/body interventions are scientifically proven, and have the same foundation in conventional medicine as surgery and pharmaceuticals. Alternative medicine, on the other hand, does not have scientific validation.

Mind/Body Health focuses on a wide range of intervention strategies that are proven to promote health, such as relaxation methods, visual imagery, meditation, yoga, acupuncture, cognitive-behavioral therapy and group support. Mind/Body programs teach you how to feel better and regain a sense of control in your life. Participants of Mind/Body programs learn a variety of relaxation techniques, stress-management strategies and lifestyle changes while being in a supportive group environment.

To the extent that your medical condition and/or symptoms are caused or made worse by stress, Mind/Body programs can help reverse the negative impact stress has on your mind and body. The Mind/Body Health model takes into account that physical health is influenced by thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and conversely, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors can be influenced by physical symptoms. Those who utilize mind/body approaches gain strength, awareness and a capacity for self-care, all of which enhance and complement conventional medical treatments for infertility, cancer and many other diseases.

If you are struggling with infertility, please look at our Mind/Body Program for Infertility. If you are struggling with other health issues or diseases worsened by stress, Mind/Body strategies can and have been proven to help, so please contact the Complementary Care Group to further discuss a treatment approach specifically for you at (913) 515-7338.

A Fertility Plan is helpful in navigating the decision-making process of treatment and family-building options. Having a Fertility Plan serves as a compass giving direction when you may feel lost or unsure about what direction to take in building your family."

For women suffering from depression and/or anxiety, even in the mild to moderate range, relieving symptoms increases chance of conceiving while going through treatment. Research shows that women who receive psychological support while going through medical treatment for infertility have higher conception rates than women who do not receive psychological support while going through treatment."
